According to the Internet Movie Database, Samuel L. Jackson’s next film role is as the “Narrator” of Quentin Tarantino’s curiously spelled World War II project, Inglourious Basterds, which opens in August. I suspect that means we’re only going to hear Jackson, not see him, but I’m perfectly fine with that. When I think of the actor’s most memorable work, his voice is what first comes to mind, particularly when it is delivering some beautifully wrought put-down, come-on or threat of violence. Listening to Jackson wrap his instrument around a Plutonium-tipped f-bomb can be as thrilling as hearing a great opera soprano sustain a high E-flat in the “Mad Scene” of Lucia di Lammermoor, and for those cultural aesthetes who may have just scowled at this comparison, I say, hold the phone, motherfucker.
